Dizziness or drowsiness can cause falls, accidents, or severe injuries. Tramadol should not be given to a child younger than 12 years old, or anyone younger than 18 years old who recently had surgery to remove the tonsils or adenoids. Extended-release tramadol (Ultram ER) should not be given to anyone younger than 18 years. Tramadol may cause serious side effects, some of which may be fatal. A person’s genetics can affect the ween off alcohol pain-relieving properties of tramadol (see How do genetics affect tramadol?).
- Inform patients and caregivers about the various ways to obtain naloxone as permitted by individual state naloxone dispensing and prescribing requirements or guidelines (e.g., by prescription, directly from a pharmacist, or as part of a community-based program).
- Ask your pharmacist for the instructions or visit the manufacturer’s website to get the instructions.
- In patients with severe hepatic impairment, adjustment of the dosing regimen is recommended see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION.
- There are many other side effects and warnings with tramadol and this is not a complete list.
Chronic use of opioids may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, leading to androgen deficiency that may manifest as low libido, impotence, erectile dysfunction, amenorrhea, or infertility. The causal role of opioids in the clinical syndrome of hypogonadism is unknown because the various medical, physical, lifestyle, and psychological stressors that may influence gonadal hormone levels have not been adequately controlled for in studies conducted to date see ADVERSE REACTIONS. Progeny of dams receiving oral (gavage) dose levels of 50mg/kg 1.2 times the MRHD) or greater had decreased weights, and pup survival was decreased early in lactation at 80 mg/kg(1.9 times the MRHD). Neonatal seizures, neonatal withdrawal syndrome, fetal death and still birth have been reported during postmarketing. Advise caregivers that ULTRAM is contraindicated in children younger than 12 years of age and in children younger than 18years of age following tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy. Advise caregivers of children ages 12 to 18 years of age receiving ULTRAM to monitor for signs of respiratory depression see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS.
“Drug-seeking” behavior is very common in persons with substance use disorders. “Doctor shopping” (visiting multiple prescribers to obtain additional prescriptions) is common amongdrug abusers and people suffering from untreated addiction. Individually titrate ULTRAM to a dose that provides adequate analgesia and minimizes adverse reactions. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. how to make yourself pee If you use tramadol while you are pregnant, your baby could become dependent on the drug (addicted). Possibly fatal withdrawal symptoms may occur in your baby after it is born, causing death.

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of low blood pressure. Tramadol may cause suicidal thoughts or actions in a small number of people. If you are about to harm yourself, call 911 or call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Store at room temperature away from moisture and how long does molly stay in your hair heat and out of reach of children. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how tramadol will affect you.
Side Effects for Ultram
Brands of tramadol include ConZip, Qdolo, Ultram, and Ultram ER. Analgesia in humans begins approximately within one hour after administration and reaches a peak in approximately two to three hours. ULTRAM (tramadol hydrochloride) 50 mg (equivalent to 43.9 mg of tramadol) tablets are white, capsule-shaped, coated, with a functional score. The tablets are imprinted “ULTRAM” on one side and “06 59” on the scored side. A 2015 study published in the Clinical Journal of Pain suggested that tramadol led to fewer healthcare provider’s visits for people with fibromyalgia. We have a few studies demonstrating that it may be effective, including at least one that suggests it’s the only narcotic painkiller demonstrated to help with the unique pain types of fibromyalgia.
This document does not contain all possible side effects and others may occur. Check with your physician for additional information about side effects. Remember, keep this and all other medicines out of the reach of children, never share your medicines with others, and use Ultram only for the indication prescribed. Swallow the capsule or tablet whole to avoid exposure to a potentially fatal overdose. Stop taking all other opioid medications when you start taking Ultram.
Patient Information for Ultram
Get emergency help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of SJS or TEN. Since tramadol is used for pain, you are unlikely to miss a dose. Skip any missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Just one dose can cause death if someone uses it accidentally or improperly.
Clinical Studies
At least one death was reported in a nursing infant who was exposed to high levels of morphine in breast milk because the mother was an ultra-rapid metabolizer of codeine. A baby nursing from an ultra-rapid metabolizer mother taking ULTRAM could potentially be exposed to high levels of M1, and experience life-threatening respiratory depression. For this reason, breastfeeding is notrecommended during treatment with ULTRAM see Use In Specific Populations.
Babies born dependent on habit-forming medicine may need medical treatment for several weeks. Your risk of seizures is higher if you are taking higher doses than recommended. Seizure risk is also higher in those with a seizure disorder or those taking certain antidepressants or opioid medications. If infants are exposed to ULTRAM through breast milk, they should be monitored for excess sedation and respiratory depression. Withdrawal symptoms can occur in breastfed infants when maternal administration of an opioid analgesic is stopped, or when breast-feeding is stopped. Explain to patients and caregivers that naloxone’s effects are temporary, and that they must call 911 or get emergency medical help right away in all cases of known or suspected opioid overdose, even if naloxone is administered see OVERDOSAGE.
Tell your healthcare provider if you feel that tramadol is not working. Call your healthcare provider right away or go to the nearest emergency room if you have any of the following serious symptoms. You may have withdrawal symptoms if you stop using tramadol suddenly. Tramadol extended-release capsules may be used by adults who require around-the-clock treatment of their moderate to moderately severe chronic pain for an extended time.
